Comprehensive Introduction to Canoeing or Kayaking

The canoe is still the most widely used form of self-propelled water transportation in the world. It was also the historical tool responsible for opening up much of the United States where larger ships could not travel. The art of canoeing is essential to the outdoorsman/woman. Solo or tandem, canoeing is a skill that offers recreation, exercise and relaxation. It expands the backcountry and opens up the outdoors.

Estela Wilderness Education Comprehensive Introduction to Canoeing or Kayaking

You never know who or what you’ll run into while out on the water. Come and find out.

The class will begin at Mainstream Canoe Corporation on Route 44 in New Hartford, CT. Here the participants will be properly outfitted with their own canoe, paddle and life jacket. A brief safety discussion will take place here before loading canoes and equipment for the federally designated wild and scenic Farmington River. Once on site, the canoes will be carried down to the river where participants will load and launch. All the basics of canoeing will be covered in a large flat water pool before embarking on a 5 mile canoe trip down to the canoe shop. Along the way, students will work on canoe maneuvering and essential tripping skills. Once all participants return to the shop, the basics of canoe camping will be covered. Participants will be treated to a backwoods dinner over the campfire. During the evening, bushcraft and camping skills will be practiced and demonstrated. This class is one of a kind and unlike any other offered elsewhere!

As a seasoned Guide and Canoeing Instructor, I will teach you the real skills needed to canoe safely. With any skill, you can either sit back and watch people do it or learn to do it yourself! Why not come out and try?

Cost: $100 (Includes rental, instruction and dinner)

“My love for the outdoors was strengthened by my experiences out on the water. I first learned to kayak at age 14 and spent years teaching both kayaking and canoeing. It is one of my passions and the experiences I have enjoyed behind a paddle are now those I enjoy passing onto others. This course was the first course offered by Estela Wilderness Education back in June 2011 and will always be an option for my students.” -Kevin Estela
